Framing — Nova Scotia, NB & PEI
Framing.
Square, plumb, and ready for the trades behind us.
Overview
Square, plumb, and ready for the trades behind us.
Framing is the trade every other trade inherits. Walls that are out of plumb become cabinets that need scribing, drywall that needs shimming, and doors that never quite close. We frame to the drawings and we check as we go, because a quarter inch caught at the deck is free and the same quarter inch caught at trim is a change order.
The Maritimes put two loads on a frame that inland builders think about less: wind and snow. Post-tropical storms have made hurricane-rated connections a routine specification rather than an upgrade — Fiona and Dorian both did their damage at connections rather than in the middle of members. We detail uplift and shear connections properly, sheath and nail to the schedule rather than by eye, and keep the load path continuous from roof to foundation.
We frame new builds, additions, garages and structural alterations inside existing homes. Older Nova Scotia housing stock is its own problem set — balloon framing, undersized joists, notched-out beams from a previous renovation, and floors that have not been level since the 1940s. We will tell you plainly which of that we can correct within your budget and which is better left alone.
Typical range
Quoted after a site visit
We have not published a range for this trade yet. Every job is quoted line by line after a site visit.
What’s included
Six things you are buying.
Concrete deliverables, not adjectives. Each of these is on the quote.
- Floor systems, walls, roofs and additions framed to the drawings
- Hurricane and uplift connections detailed for post-tropical wind loads
- Sheathing and nailing to schedule, not by eye
- Continuous load path maintained from roof through to foundation
- Structural alterations in existing homes — beams, headers, temporary shoring
- Deck checked for square and level before walls go up, and corrected if it is not
How it runs
Four stages, start to finish.
- 01
Drawings and takeoff
We read the drawings, flag anything that will not build as drawn, and do a materials takeoff so lumber is ordered once rather than in four trips.
- 02
Deck and layout
Floor system in, deck checked for square and level, plate layout snapped and marked. Everything after this inherits whatever we get right here.
- 03
Walls, roof and sheathing
Walls stood, braced and plumbed, roof framed or trusses set, sheathing on and nailed to schedule with uplift connections installed as we go.
- 04
Walk and hand-off
We walk the frame with you before it disappears behind insulation, note anything the following trades need to know, and leave the site swept.
Why Anant
How the job is run, not how good we say we are.
- Seven trades kept in house, so handoffs do not wait on somebody else’s calendar
- A written scope and a quote broken out line by line
- Written change orders — nothing moves the price without your signature
- One point of contact who knows the state of your job
- Permit applications and inspection booking handled by us
- A deficiency walk with you before the final invoice

Questions
Framing, answered.
Yes, as standard rather than as an upgrade. Storms like Dorian and Fiona did most of their structural damage at connections — roof-to-wall and wall-to-foundation — rather than by breaking members. We detail the uplift path continuously and nail sheathing to the schedule, which is where wind resistance actually comes from.
Yes, and it is common work for us. The complication is usually what we find at the tie-in: balloon framing, undersized or notched joists, or a floor that has settled. We open it up, tell you what is actually there, and price the correction separately so you can decide how far to take it.
Sometimes, and it depends on why. Settlement at a beam or post can often be corrected with jacking and new support; a floor that was framed undersized a century ago is a bigger structural conversation. We will tell you which one you have before you commit to a budget, not after.
It moves with square footage, how complicated the roof is, whether there is a structural tie-in to an existing building, site access, and lumber pricing at the time we buy. We quote off a takeoff so materials and labour are visible separately, which also means you can see what a design change is actually costing.
