Halifax, NSHead office

Halifax is where we are based, and the peninsula is a renovation market of its own — South End and North End homes largely built before the 1930s, wood framed, often with plaster and lath, knob-and-tube still turning up behind walls, and floor plans laid out when kitchens were meant to be closed off. Off the peninsula the stock changes completely, from Clayton Park apartments and post-war bungalows out to newer subdivision builds.

Halifax Regional Municipality

Dartmouth, NS

Dartmouth spans a wide range of housing ages in a short distance. Downtown Dartmouth and the streets around the Portland Street corridor hold a lot of older stock now being renovated in earnest, while Woodlawn and the areas around the lakes are dominated by post-war and 1960s bungalows and splits — the ones with low basements, original wiring and kitchens that have been waiting decades.

Halifax Regional Municipality

Bedford, NS

Bedford skews newer than most of HRM, and that shapes the work. Bedford West and the subdivisions above the Bedford Highway are largely builder-built homes from the last few decades — structurally sound, but often with unfinished basements, builder-grade kitchens and bathrooms reaching the end of their first life, and decks that were framed to the minimum.

Lower Sackville, NS

Lower Sackville grew through the 1970s and 1980s, and a great deal of the housing along and off the Sackville Drive corridor dates from that period — splits and two-storeys with original kitchens, aging siding and basements that were framed but never properly finished. It is a practical renovation market rather than a heritage one: the work is usually about bringing a solid house up to current expectations rather than restoring anything.

Cole Harbour, NS

Cole Harbour and the neighbourhoods around Colby Village and Forest Hills are largely subdivision housing from the 1970s onward — a consistent stock of family homes now at the age where kitchens, bathrooms, flooring and exterior cladding all come due at roughly the same time. Being close to the water, exterior work here needs coastal detailing: fasteners that will not corrode and cladding fastened for wind rather than to the minimum spacing..

Hammonds Plains, NS

Hammonds Plains is larger lots and newer, bigger houses — the subdivisions off the Hammonds Plains Road, including Kingswood, are mostly recent builds on generous properties. Two things follow from that: a lot of the work is additions, garages, decks and finishing large unfinished basements rather than gut renovations, and many properties are on well and septic, which changes what a plumbing alteration involves.

Truro, NS

Truro sits at the junction of the province, which makes it a straightforward run for us from Halifax. The town has a solid core of older housing around the downtown and the streets near Victoria Park — Victorian and early twentieth century stock with the plaster, wiring and settlement that come with it — alongside newer subdivision development on the edges.

Amherst, NS

Amherst has one of the more distinctive downtowns in the province — the sandstone and brick commercial buildings along Victoria Street — and a residential stock to match, much of it dating from the town’s industrial period. That means solid, well-built houses that are now well past a century, with the usual accompaniment of plaster, original framing and systems that have been added to piecemeal.

New Glasgow and the surrounding Pictou County towns carry housing from the region’s industrial era — compact, well-framed homes built for workers, many of them close to a century old and on the smaller side. Sydney, NS

Sydney has some of the oldest continuously occupied housing stock we work in. The streets around the north end and Whitney Pier hold homes built well before the war, and a great many have never had a full renovation — original wiring, layered flooring, and additions made over the decades without much consistency.

Glace Bay, NS

Glace Bay’s housing came largely out of its coal years — compact homes built close together, many of them a century old, on streets laid out around the collieries. They are generally well framed and small, which makes layout changes and basement work valuable, and it also makes exterior work a priority: this is exposed coastal Cape Breton and cladding, flashing and fasteners take a beating that inland work never sees..

Bridgewater, NS

Bridgewater is the service centre for the South Shore, and its housing runs from older homes on the streets near the LaHave River through to newer development on the outskirts. The wider Lunenburg County market brings a steady amount of exterior work — this is a coastal county with real wind exposure, and siding, decks and trim details here need to be built for it rather than to an inland standard..

Kentville, NS

Kentville sits in the Annapolis Valley, and the housing reflects a long agricultural history — older homes and farmhouses across Kings County alongside town stock near the Main Street core and newer subdivision building around the edges. Farmhouse renovation is its own discipline: additions made over generations, uneven floors, and structure that has to be understood before it is altered.

Windsor, NS

Windsor is an easy run from Halifax along the 101, which makes it practical for us to work here regularly. The town has a good deal of older housing near the centre, with the maintenance profile that comes with age, and the surrounding Hants County area adds rural properties and farmhouses.

Moncton, NB

Moncton has been one of the faster-growing centres in Atlantic Canada, and its housing splits accordingly. The older neighbourhoods around the downtown and the Mountain Road corridor hold century-old and mid-century homes wanting full renovation, while the newer subdivisions in the north end are recent builds where the work is finishing basements, adding decks and upgrading builder-grade finishes.

Dieppe, NB

Dieppe is among the fastest-growing communities in New Brunswick, and it shows in the housing — a large share of it built recently, in subdivisions that have expanded steadily outward. That makes for a specific kind of work: large unfinished basements waiting to be turned into living space, decks and outdoor living added after the fact, and kitchens and bathrooms being upgraded from the builder specification rather than replaced outright..

Saint John, NB

Saint John holds a remarkable amount of nineteenth-century building, much of it brick and stone in the uptown and older wood-framed housing on the slopes around it. Renovating here means dealing with genuinely old structure, and with a climate that is hard on exteriors — Bay of Fundy fog, salt and wind mean flashing, cladding detail and fastener choice matter more than they would inland.

Charlottetown, PE

Charlottetown has a heritage core with a high concentration of nineteenth-century housing — much of it protected, all of it old enough that renovation means working with plaster, original framing and altered layouts. Around that core, newer subdivision development has grown steadily, and the work there is the familiar one of finishing basements and updating original builder finishes.
