Siding — Nova Scotia, NB & PEI
Siding & Exteriors.
Detailed for coastal wind and salt air.
Overview
Detailed for coastal wind and salt air.
Siding is a rain-management system that happens to be the part of your house people can see. What keeps water out is not the cladding — it is the housewrap, the flashing at every penetration and transition, and the drainage plane behind. We install the layers you never see as carefully as the ones you do, because that is the part that determines whether you are doing this again in eight years.
On the coast, two forces do the damage. Wind gets behind poorly fastened cladding and peels it — post-tropical storms have taught most of this province that lesson directly. And salt air corrodes fasteners and flashing that would last decades inland. We fasten to the manufacturer specification for high-wind exposure rather than to the minimum, and we use stainless or hot-dip galvanized where salt reaches, because a wall held on by rusting nails is a wall waiting for the next October.
We do full re-sides, additions matched into existing cladding, and the trim work around windows, doors, soffit and fascia that most of the visible quality actually lives in. On a re-side we always look at what is behind before quoting — sheathing that has been getting wet for a decade changes the job, and finding that on day two is worse for both of us than finding it before you sign.
Typical range
Quoted after a site visit
We have not published a range for this trade yet. Every job is quoted line by line after a site visit.
What’s included
Six things you are buying.
Concrete deliverables, not adjectives. Each of these is on the quote.
- Housewrap and drainage plane installed as a system, laps in the right direction
- Flashing at every window, door, penetration and material transition
- High-wind fastening schedule rather than the minimum spacing
- Stainless or hot-dip galvanized fasteners where salt air reaches
- Vinyl, board-and-batten and engineered wood, plus soffit, fascia and trim
- Sheathing inspected and rot addressed before new cladding goes on
How it runs
Four stages, start to finish.
- 01
Exterior assessment
We walk the elevations, check what is behind the existing cladding at a few points, and look at exposure — which walls take the weather here decides how they get detailed.
- 02
Strip and repair
Old cladding removed and disposed of, sheathing inspected, and any rot or water damage shown to you and priced before it is covered back up.
- 03
Weather barrier and flashing
Housewrap and drainage plane installed with laps running the right way, then flashing at every opening, penetration and transition. This is the part that does the work.
- 04
Cladding and trim
Cladding fastened to high-wind specification, then soffit, fascia and trim detailed — followed by a full site cleanup including a magnet sweep for fasteners.

Questions
Siding, answered.
It does when it is fastened for the exposure. Most storm failures are installation failures — nails driven too tight so panels cannot move, spacing at the minimum instead of the high-wind schedule, or missing starter and J-channel detail. We install to the manufacturer high-wind specification, which is what the warranty depends on anyway.
Yes, and noticeably within a few kilometres of open water. Standard electro-galvanized fasteners corrode, stain the cladding and eventually stop holding. We use stainless or hot-dip galvanized on coastal exposures. It is a small share of the job cost and it is the difference between cladding that stays on and cladding that does not.
We stop, photograph it, show you, and price the repair before covering it. We do not quietly cover damaged sheathing, and we do not treat it as an automatic blank cheque either — you see the extent and decide. Building in a contingency for this on any re-side over about thirty years old is realistic.
Wall area and number of storeys drive most of it, then material choice, how much trim and detail work there is around openings, staging or lift requirements for height, and whatever repair the sheathing needs. We quote the cladding and the repair allowance separately so a surprise behind the wall does not read as a surprise on the invoice.
