Composite costs more up front and effectively removes annual maintenance, which is worth a lot in this climate — wet, freeze-thaw and UV are hard on wood. Pressure-treated costs less and can look excellent if you are willing to maintain it. Composite does expand and contract more with temperature, so gapping and fastening have to be right. We flash the ledger, fasten it into solid framing with proper hardware, and on a rebuild we open up and inspect what the old ledger did before we build anything new on it.
